Sad? Food pics as balm

Feeling a bit down in the dumps.

Looking at what I ate since the beginning of the year helps me feel a bit better. How come I don't have any pictures of our typical rice-veggies-meat-daal dinners???

                    Yesterday's dinner
                                                                                           Chicken dumplings and soup

Not a big drinker. Bought a case after work. It was okay.

This was a 'second dinner' situation.

                                    My fav snack
                                                                                                In my diet era

          Back to regular programming

The achars were so good, alu dum and momos were so-so.

One last hurrah for my skinny self.

Pulled back into the world of midnight snacks.

are you doing well?

Spent 10 mins yesterday crying over the masterpiece that is Jaurim's 25, 21

Something about her voice and the atmosphere of the song always gets me. The words she sings can feel so simple but each one is dripping with meaning and life. This song has stood the test of time.

This led me to think about other songs that have pulled me in. I've never thought of myself as a music lover. I think that's because I always measure passion by the yardstick of my deep love for books and stories. I love books so much. To give an example, I get teary-eyed when I come across booktubers who are clearly so excited and passionate. There was this one person who was filming his reaction to some book award and he was so nervous as if he was the one up for the award. These days I don't have the best feeling about existing so this experience made me feel glad to be alive.

Back to songs that stir my heart in inexplicable ways

FUCK YOU.......but I still love you very much, 25/21

I'm absolutely livid at that last bit they showed at that ep finale!!! Why the fuck would you rub salt on my wound??? I'm never recovering from this betrayal ever. All that fan theories I read and held on to with the biggest hopes have been dashed.. ARGHHHHHHH I'm so miserable...

DEEP BREATHSSS

There was a big moment that stood out to me from ep 16 (apart from that nasty bit at the very end)...The scene in between the episode in the tunnel where they thrash out their issues. It felt so real and emotional I almost forgot I was watching a show. I've never ever felt that the stuff I was watching was actually being played out in real life. It was really a strange feeling to lose it for a few seconds. I truly believed in that moment where they were breaking up and then Heedo asks Yijin if he ever loved her and he is incredulous and angry at the question. Then as she leaves, he calls out to her twice. That entire scene was brilliant.

I don't want to make this all about the fucking finale but I do want to say that despite my deep anger and desire to curse the writer/director this very moment, I think they are amazing and I loved this show with all my heart. After a slew of uninspiring, boring shows that I have been watching recently, this one was excellent and jam packed with all that makes a drama beautiful, loved and enduring.

Kim Taeri, I have loved you ever since I watched Little Forest and The Handmaiden. Nam Joohyuk, I thought you were just eye-candy and I'm sorry I didn't respect your talent apart from enjoying your work in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Soo.

Now I think you both are the greatest thing since sliced bread. The characters of Na Heedo and Baek Yijin are tailor made for you.

I love all the other characters - Go Yurim, Moon Jiwoong, Ji Seungwan.  I love the fan/rival/friend relationship between Heedo and Yurim. I love the friendship of Jiwoong and Seungwan. I loved how Heedo's mother was such a career woman. I loved Yijin's mom being so openly and deeply in love with her husband.

The writer/s did an amazing job taking us back to the time of the South Korean financial crisis and showing us how it impacted the people there. There's a lot to unpack here about this but I will leave it to people who know about this better and can articulate it.

I can't write anymore because my heart hurts and I'm angry about the ending. But let me put on my mature and subjective hat on for this sentence and admit that the story did not NOT make sense. Not every love story gets a happy ending and that's okay.  I just have never wished so hard for a Korean drama to be cliche. I will never ever take that for granted now.

Let me go back to crying and mending my broken heart.

nature and her blessings, social media and its gifts

In today's episode of things that make my heart sing, I present to you.........drum roll......

I love this account so much. And I'm thankful to the person behind it, the one who sees the beauty and captures it in such a beautiful way. I can almost imagine myself in the vicinity of the pictures.

What is it about nature and flowers!

Hashtag blessed

The past few weeks have been good to me. Or rather, I've been good to myself.

Just some few, low-key gifts of existence, but beautiful. And work life is looking good, mental health is great, weekend coming up. I'll take that as a win-win.

On Monday evening after work, I stepped out to the garden and found the mint in all its glory. They look so healthy and fresh, don't they?

portal to life's little big joy

Still struggling with reader's block but I have to admit things are taking a turn for the better. Something's beginning to stir and I'm slowlyyyy getting back to enjoying reading again.

Yet, it has not been easy. The journey's been slow and, to be honest, quite tedious. It takes me painfully long to complete a single book. Sometimes, I manage to whiz through many chapters in one sitting. Most times I barely finish a couple of pages.

But despite all these challenges, one thing I have always been able to count on is the wonderful feeling of comfort and joy I get when I meander through my ebook folder.

It's like having a friend who I know for certain will always have my back.

I have lots of folders within that folder and it is amazing to take a look around and see all the treasures they contain.

I add new books. Or delete ones I've already read (though that is rare these days as I've been struggling to read). Rifle through the folders to find a particular one I want to send to friends.

Oh what joy that folder holds. Is this what happiness is? LOL

Life's little big pleasures.

Little Forest

The last day of January was particularly difficult. The usual emotions of stress, guilt, imposter syndrome, and grief.

Cried alone, hidden away in my room as usual.

But I found a treat even on such a grey and morose day. Got around to watching 'Little Forest' finally. I've been wanting to watch this movie for a couple of years. Maybe the best things are really worth waiting for, huh.

'Little Forest' is a Korean movie based on a Japanese manga of the same name. There's also a Japanese movie whose cinematography is supposedly phenomenal. But this 2018 Korean adaptation has my heart.

This movie feels quiet and large at the same time, you know? Like it is just a small cog in this wheel of life but the mighty strength it exudes feels so all-encompassing and safe.

The story brief goes like this - Hye-won returns to her village home after failing an important exam in Seoul which would have started her career as a teacher. She is already battling old and new emotional scars - an unresolved issue concerning her mother, an unfulfilling stressful job, feeling lost. But when asked the reason for her return, she simply says she was hungry.

And how she eats!

Like a lot of young people who see the culmination of their dreams achievable only in the shiny bright city lights, Hye-won sees this return only as a hiatus. A brief respite from the overwhelming grind of city life and the rat race. She is in no hurry to get back. After all, she only has a convenience store job and a faltering bond with her boyfriend - both of which, at best, only have a tenuous hold on her.

Back in her village, she has time and the environment to heal as well as two old friends, wholesome food and memories of her mother. Unlike the unforgiving pace of the city, she can bask in the luxury of time to find healing at a pace she is comfortable in.

The friendships are wholesome and lovely.

One friend dreams of pursuing a better life in the city. She has had enough of her boring village life and her bank manager.

The other has walked away from a 9-5 office life and a girlfriend only to return home to find his roots in farming. A revitalised life for him.

And what is Hye-won seeking? What has she come back for?

Perhaps the hunger she was referring to was not just for comfort food. Possibly, what she needed was solace in the form of old, familiar things and a slowing down of life and time to readjust her life's compass.

For now, she is taking each day as it comes.

She wants to be here for the winter, then she wants to see the spring. She wants to be there when her tomatoes ripen and when the onions grow.

Summer comes around and then the next winter snow starts blanketing the earth.

Like the best of slice-of-life movies, 'Little Forest' makes its viewers want to experience the character's daily life. But as we stray into the danger zone - of losing ourselves in the beauty of 'the simple life' and aesthetics shots of Hye-won cooking and working in the fields, we are reminded that this is no easy life. It is backbreaking work and there's the risk of a freak rainfall ruining your chances of a good harvest. This 'simple life' involves copious amounts of physically hard work and vast knowledge of the plants, the earth, and the seasons.

I thought it did a great job of pulling me back to reality. Because I would make a poor farmer. I cannot even keep a pot of plant alive.

I found the movie very charming. It was just the pick-me-up I needed.

The underlying message of the story is well captured in the following quote.

“When things are hard, remember the scent of the land, the wind and sun here, then I know you can dust yourself off and get up again. Let's think of it as a start of a long trip to return home well.”

It is a reminder that there is always hope. A reminder to keep the faith. To hold on to good memories and good friends. And ultimately, to always believe in oneself.

'Little Forest' was a perfect blend of story and acting and directing. It was not slow. It was not hurried. It had its own sweet rhythm and flow.

And through it all we go along with Hye-won on her journey of running away, forgetting, healing, remembering and finally finding the strength to face her future.
